In the 1930s and 1940s, people then constructed roads and bridges, eliminating the need for a boat to reach El Palmar.

The Draw for Fishing Spots
On the second Sunday of July, the Fishermen’s Community holds a special centuries-old draw. When a name is called, the person selects a fixed fishing spot (redolin) for eel fishing, among fish. Those called first are luckiest, since they get to pick the spots with the most fish.
The El Palmar Fishing Community (Comunidad de Pescadores) was founded in 1250. A member gave me a tour of this building which houses the meeting hall.
The El Palmar Fishermen’s Community is, by the way, the only organization authorized to assign fishing spots in Albufera Lagoon.

Take Part in a Unique Boat Procession: The Christ of Health Pilgrimage (Romería del Cristo de la Salud)
Each year on August 4, El Palmar Valencia celebrates the Christ of Health Pilgrimage. At sunset, about 200 boats leave El Palmar Pier heading to Albufera Lagoon.
One boat carries a statue of Jesus from the town church. What basically takes place is a mass on boats in the middle of the lagoon. Afterwards, a marching band plays on one of the boats and spirits run high.
I have not attended this boat procession, but these bloggers took lots of photos – also of the traditional costumes. They additionally learned that you need to reserve a spot on a boat well in advance. After all, this event takes place on the water.
There’s more: On August 6, the town celebrates the Christ of Health Pilgrimage with a Holy Communion in the Jesuset de l’Hort church at 12 noon.

If you’re staying in Valencia, just hop on bus 24 which costs €1.50. The 40-minute bus ride is quite pleasant, especially since you get to take in nice views of Albufera Park and Lagoon.
If you’re flying in from abroad, the nearest airport is Valencia Airport, which is approximately 25 kilometers away from the village. From the airport, you can take a taxi or rent a car to reach El Palmar Valencia.
If you’re traveling by train, the nearest train station is Valencia Estació del Nord. From there, you can take a taxi. Otherwise, take a local bus which connects with local bus number 24 to reach El Palmar Valencia.
If you prefer to drive, the village is approximately 30 minutes from the center of Valencia, making it a convenient day trip.
Once you arrive in El Palmar Valencia, it’s easy to get around. The village is very small so you can explore it by foot or bicycle. Local buses also connect El Palmar Valencia to other nearby towns and attractions.
