Savor the delightful flavor of homemade pear sauce with this easy recipe! Made from fresh, ripe pears, this velvety sauce is perfect on its own or as a tasty topping for pancakes, oatmeal, yogurt, fish, meats, and more.

I have a pear tree in my yard, so making pear sauce is an annual family tradition. In fact, I love cooking and baking with pears so much that I also make pear curd, non alcoholic poached pears, apple pear sauce, red wine poached pears and a scrumptious pear tart.
I’m incredibly excited to share some tips and a list of delicious spices that pair beautifully with pears. So keep reading!
From top left: Skinless pear sauce, rustic pear sauce with skin, cinnamon flavored, chocolate flavored.

There Are Basically Two Types of Pear Sauce
- Skinless has a milder flavor than sauce made with the skins. It’s delicious on its own and above all perfect in creamy pear curd.
- Pear sauce with the skin has a richer flavor and is more like biting into the actual fruit. It has added texture with small bits of skin, giving it a more rustic, homemade feel.
There Are Countless Ways to Flavor and Spice Homemade Pear Sauce
Here are some of the many ways to spice this delicious homemade treat:
- Chocolate – Just stir in some cocoa powder and a bit of sugar or monk fruit
- Cinnamon – Add some cinnamon for that classic cinnamon-pear flavor.
- Cinnamon chocolate – another yummy twist.
- Cinnamon ginger – another tasty variation.
- Cinnamon honey – Add honey and cinnamon for a sweeter, more indulgent recipe.
- Ginger – Grate fresh ginger into the pear mixture or use ground ginger to add a warm, spicy kick.
- Lemon – Lemon adds a bright, zesty contrast to the sweet fruit. Use it sparingly though. Otherwise you can overpower the pear flavor. In addition, the more lemon you use, the more sweetener you might need to add.
- Pear-apple sauce – For a twist on the classic, replace half of the pears with tart or sweet apples.
- Bourbon – Stir in a tablespoon or two of bourbon or brandy, adding a subtle depth of flavor.
- Rosemary – Fresh or dried rosemary lends a savory note, creating a unique and versatile condiment.
- Spiced – In addition to the ground cinnamon, you can experiment with other warm spices, such as nutmeg, ginger, or allspice, to create a more complex and aromatic recipe.
- Vanilla – Add a splash of vanilla extract or a vanilla bean to the mixture during the cooking process to infuse the sauce with a delicate vanilla flavor.

Sweeteners That Work Wonderfully in This Homemade Pear Sauce Recipe
You don’t need to sweeten delicious pear sauce, but here are some options if you’d like to add a touch of sweetness.
- White or brown sugar
- White or brown monk fruit sweetener
- Honey
- Maple syrup
- Coconut sugar – has a rich, caramel-like flavor with subtle hints of butterscotch. Its unique taste may not appeal to everyone, so if you’re curious, try adding a small amount to a bowl of pear sauce to see if you like it!
Ingredients in Homemade Pear Sauce
Making pear sauce is incredibly simple. You can even make it with pears alone.
- 5 ripe pears (any variety) – 5 pears or 600 grams of chopped pear make 2 cups of pear sauce.
- 1-2 tablespoons of sugar or monk fruit sweetener (optional, adjust to taste)
- Spices (optional) – cinnamon, ginger, vanilla, chocolate and more.
How to Make Pear Sauce
This is how to make about 2 cups of homemade pear sauce.

1. Prepare the Pears: Wash the pears. Then peel or don’t peel the pears. Next, core and chop the pears into small pieces. Then combine the chopped pears in a nonstick pan or saucepan. You can add up to 1/4 cup of water, but I don’t add water because the pears start getting juicy in a few minutes. Moreover, water dilutes the pear flavor.
Also note that you don’t need to add lemon juice because pears oxidize more slowly than apples, but you can add lemon for flavor.
2. Cook over medium heat until the pears soften, about 10-15 minutes. Stir occasionally.

3. Mash or Blend: Once the pears are soft, you can mash them with a fork for a chunky sauce.
4. Or use an immersion blender, regular blender or food processor to puree them into silky, smooth pear sauce.

5. Here’s the finished pear sauce.
6. Add Flavor (optional): Mix in sugar or a zero-calorie sweetener like monk fruit (if using), along with spices, lemon juice, or any other flavors you’d like to add to the sauce.
Adjust the quantities to taste, but I suggest adding spices in 1/2 teaspoon increments. For optimal flavor, heat the sauce in the pan to dissolve the sugar and evenly distribute the spices.
Cool and Store
Let the sauce cool, then transfer it to a jar or container and enjoy!
Refrigerate This Pear Sauce Recipe
You can store it in the refrigerator for up to a week.
Freeze This Delicious Condiment
Freeze it in an airtight container for longer storage.

In conclusion, that’s everything you need to know to make amazing homemade pear sauce. If you love pears, I definitely recommend trying this healthy fruit recipe.
